Weekly Creative Writing #5

Je pense, j’aime, je ris.  I think, I love, I laugh.  How can the three be separate?  To laugh is to think and love, and to express the feeling, that indescribable feeling that the word joy comes close to but does not touch.  When I was small, I laughed at the thoughts which entered my mind through amusing books that I loved.  I laughed over this, I remember well... those halcyon days when, looking back through the curtain of the past, my life seems to me to have been carefree and full of laughter.  But things change and, though the books which used to bring laughter to my lips may do the same now, I am not who I once was, and the effect is different.  Laughter is this, running one’s hand over a book which I loved, and thinking about a long-ago miniature version of myself.  Laughter is the scent of the fall leaves, thinking of the changing of the seasons and the falls past and future which we have lived and will live, and loving them.
Laughter is the taste of your favourite meal, prepared by one who is dear to you, and thinking of them and the work they have done.  Laughter is hearing a song that reminds you of a happy time in your life, and all of those thoughts which coursed through your mind at the time come crashing back with each bar of the melody.  Perhaps not all of those thoughts were correct or right, but we can love them all the same.
But the best kind, the most beautiful kind, the rarest kind, is the glance into the depths of a best friend’s eyes, and finding laughter there.  Not a word need be spoken, not a sound be made.  It can be silent.  But it is as real as the stars that shine in the night, as real as the sea that pounds the shore in a rhythm: je pense, j’aime, je ris.
